What are Fumed and dichroic glass pipes?

by Mark Marc 11 Jun 2023

if you are regular smoking, you should have know that a  Glass pipes are more than a poplar smoking tools, beside a joint roller, —they’re works of art. If you’ve ever found yourself admiring the stunning colors and shimmering effects of handcrafted designer glass pipes, you’ve probably come across two popular types you see in the store, they are fumed glass and dichroic glass. While both look mesmerizing, they have distinct characteristics that can impact your smoking experience and personal style.

they all look almost same shape, But what’s the real difference between these two? How do you choose the right one for your collection? Let’s break it down in a way that’s easy to understand (with a little humor and some practical advice).

What Is Fumed Glass?

Fumed glass are invent by some hard head Around 1990 Bob Snodgrass,  fumed glass was a result of a happily accident  that changed the smoking world forever.  He was blowing glass and one hand, holding silver, got too close to the flame torch.  Voila!  Color changing glass was born and the “Godfather of Glass leaves a legacy in the forever changed world of glass.

Why does Fumed glass pipe always change colors ? the short answer, they are not , they do not change colors, the way you see it maybe look different in the light,  those are the colorful effect illusion created by the glass dark resin layers. As a fumed pipe fills with resin the colors pop more against the dark background.  A pipe against a white background will appear yellow whereas it would look blue against a black background. the most common material use to make fumed glass are gold or silvers.

Fumed glass pipes are like magic in glass form. Created using precious metals like silver or gold during the glassblowing process, fumed pipes transform into something entirely unique when exposed to heat and smoke. The metals vaporize in the flame, coating the glass with a metallic film that gives the pipe its signature color-changing effect.

How It Works:
The special fuming process creates a thin layer that reacts to light, smoke, and oils. As you use the pipe, you’ll notice the colors shifting from lighter shades to deeper, richer tones. It’s like your pipe has a personality that evolves with every session.

Visual Appeal:

  • Starts with subtle, transparent tones.
  • Colors deepen as resin builds up inside.
  • Can appear metallic, iridescent, or even opalescent in the right light.

Why You’ll Love It:

  • Unique Look: No two fumed pipes are exactly alike.
  • Interactive: The more you use it, the cooler it looks.
  • Affordable: Generally less expensive than dichroic glass.

Potential Drawbacks:

  • Cleaning Dilemmas: Cleaning the pipe can reset its appearance, making it look like new (great for aesthetics, but some people miss that well-loved, broken-in look).
  • Fading Effects: Prolonged exposure to light can slightly dull the colors over time.

What Is Dichroic Glass?

Now, let’s talk about the showstopper, a  dichroic glass.  If fumed glass is subtle magic, not like fume glass, dichoric glass are result from the system, no kdiding, dichroic glass is fireworks in a pipe. Originally developed for NASA (seriously), dichroic glass is made by layering ultra-thin metallic oxides onto glass in a vacuum chamber. This creates stunning, shimmering effects that shift colors depending on how light hits the surface.

Fumed and dichroic glass pipes each bring something special to the table. Fumed pipes are perfect for those who appreciate evolving, ever-changing pieces that become personal over time. Dichroic pipes, on the other hand, are ideal for those who want eye-catching, radiant designs that make a bold statement.

So, which will it be? A pipe that changes with every session or one that shines like a piece of cosmic art? The choice is yours—and you really can’t go wrong. Just remember: your glass pipe should reflect your personality, spark joy, and, most importantly, deliver smooth, satisfying hits.

How It Works:
Dichroic glass reflects certain colors while allowing others to pass through, creating a dazzling, multicolor effect that seems to glow from within. It’s like looking at a cosmic rainbow frozen in glass.

Visual Appeal:

  • Brilliant and Shiny: Expect intense, shimmering colors.
  • Color Shifts: Different lighting angles create mesmerizing shifts.
  • Galactic Vibes: Often described as having a "space-age" or futuristic look.

Why You’ll Love It:

  • Dramatic Visuals: If you like bold, eye-catching pieces, dichroic glass pipes are unbeatable.
  • Collector's Favorite: Highly prized by collectors for their uniqueness and craftsmanship.
  • Durable Beauty: The metallic coating is embedded into the glass, making it resistant to wear.

Potential Drawbacks:

  • Pricey: High-quality dichroic glass pipes can be quite expensive.
  • Artistic Variability: Since each piece is handmade, expect some variance in how the colors appear.

Caring for Your Glass Pipe

Whether you choose fumed or dichroic glass, proper care will keep your pipe looking its best:

  1. Clean Regularly: Use isopropyl alcohol and coarse salt to remove residue.
  2. Avoid Harsh Scrubbing: Especially with fumed pipes, as aggressive cleaning can dull the color-changing effect.
  3. Store Safely: Use a padded case or soft pouch to prevent chips or cracks.
  4. Keep Out of Direct Sunlight: Prolonged exposure can fade some colors over time.
