Fumed vs. Dichroic Glass Pipes, How to Tell the Difference

If you have spent much time looking at handmade glass pipes, you have probably seen two finishes that immediately stand out. One is fumed glass, which can seem to deepen or change color over time. The other is dichroic glass, which throws bright reflective colors when the light or viewing angle changes.
They can look similar in photos, but they are made in very different ways. Fumed glass uses a very thin layer of vaporized precious metal, usually silver or gold. Dichroic glass gets its effect from thin optical coatings that reflect some wavelengths of light while allowing others to pass through.
What Is Fumed Glass?
Fumed glass is made by introducing a small amount of metal, most commonly silver or gold, into the torch flame while the glass is hot. The metal vapor settles onto the glass as an extremely thin layer and creates the iridescent colors associated with fumed pieces.
Bob Snodgrass is closely associated with bringing this style of fuming into modern American pipe-making culture in the late twentieth century. His work helped make silver and gold fuming one of the most recognizable looks in handmade functional glass.
One thing that confused me when I first started seeing fumed pieces was the idea that the glass itself was somehow changing color every time it was used. That is not really what happens.
Why Does Fumed Glass Look Like It Changes Color?
The glass is not normally changing into a new pigment. Much of the effect comes from the way light interacts with the very thin metallic layer.
Silver-fumed glass can look pale yellow or gold against a light background and much more blue or purple against a dark one. As the inside of a pipe becomes darker with use, that darker background can make the existing colors stand out much more strongly. That is why a freshly cleaned fumed pipe may look lighter again.
I have seen this difference in real pieces. A clean fumed pipe can sometimes look surprisingly subtle under bright light. Put it against a darker background and suddenly the blues and purples become much easier to see.
Silver Fuming vs Gold Fuming
Silver and gold are the two metals most commonly associated with glass fuming, but they do not usually produce exactly the same colors.
Silver fuming is often associated with blue, purple, yellow and gold effects depending on the thickness of the layer, the flame chemistry and the background behind the glass.
Gold fuming tends to produce warmer colors such as pink, red, orange and related tones.
The final result still depends heavily on the glassblower. Fuming is not like painting a fixed color onto a pipe. Small differences in the torch flame, the amount of metal and the layers of clear glass can change the finished appearance.
What Is Dichroic Glass?
Dichroic glass creates its color effect in a different way.
Modern dichroic glass commonly uses extremely thin layers of metal oxides or related optical materials deposited onto glass. Those layers are designed so some wavelengths of light are reflected while others pass through.
That is why the same piece can appear to change color when you turn it in your hand or move it from one light source to another.
The basic idea of dichroic glass is much older than the space program. Ancient Roman glass such as the famous Lycurgus Cup already showed different colors in reflected and transmitted light.
NASA and its contractors later advanced modern thin-film coating technology during the 1950s and 1960s for aerospace optical applications. Similar coating technology eventually became widely used in decorative and artistic glass.
Does NASA Really Have Anything to Do With Dichroic Glass?
Yes, but the common story that “NASA invented dichroic glass” is too simple.
Dichroic effects existed long before NASA. What NASA helped develop and commercialize was modern vacuum-deposition technology for applying extremely thin optical coatings. Those coatings were useful because they could reflect selected wavelengths while allowing others to pass through.
Eventually artists began using similar technology because the same optical behavior that worked in technical applications also produced beautiful shifting colors.
So the connection to NASA is real. It is just more accurate to say NASA helped advance the modern coating technology rather than saying it invented the idea of dichroic glass.

Is Fumed Glass Really Color Changing?
I think “color-changing glass” is a useful description, but it is also a little misleading.
The color you see can change dramatically, but much of the change comes from optics rather than the glass chemically turning from one color into another.
That is why lighting matters so much. Look at the same fumed piece against a white wall, then against something black, and it can almost seem like two different pipes.
Does Cleaning a Fumed Pipe Remove the Color?
Normally, properly made fuming does not simply wash away during ordinary cleaning because the metallic layer has been incorporated into the glasswork.
What can change is the dark background created by residue inside the pipe. Once that residue is removed, the piece may look lighter or closer to the way it looked when it was new.
This sometimes makes people think they accidentally cleaned away the color when what they actually removed was the dark background that made those colors easier to see.
Is Dichroic Glass More Expensive?
Usually, yes.
Dichroic glass itself is more specialized and can cost more than ordinary clear or colored borosilicate glass. It also tends to be used as an artistic accent, so pieces containing a lot of dichroic material often require additional glassworking time.
That does not automatically make a dichroic pipe better. It mainly makes the visual effect different.
Which One Should You Choose?
Choose fumed glass if you like a softer, more organic look and enjoy seeing how the colors appear different against changing backgrounds.
Choose dichroic glass if you want something brighter, more reflective and immediately noticeable.
Personally, I think fumed glass is more interesting when you actually handle it in different lighting. Dichroic glass tends to impress you immediately. A good fumed piece is quieter at first, and then you start noticing different colors every time you turn it.

Fumed and dichroic glass can both produce beautiful color effects, but they achieve them in very different ways.

After handling glass pipes for years, I do not think one technique is automatically better than the other. Fumed pieces tend to have a softer, almost unpredictable character. Dichroic glass is usually much more dramatic. The better choice really comes down to which kind of glass art catches your eye.
